D. Hal Otey (bass)

Hal Otey has been a core member of the Memphis Vocal Arts Ensemble since its inception in 1991. He also served on the Board of Directors as Treasurer of the organization from 1993 until 2001, and anticipates continuing to serve on various committees in helping MVAE become the best it can be. Hal began his musical career as a trombone player in junior high school in South Dakota, where he made All-State Band his senior year. In that same year, he began singing in the school’s concert choir. During his first two years at South Dakota University, Hal carried a double major in trombone and vocal performance. When he moved to Memphis in 1977 to attend Memphis State University, he decided his real love was singing. He received a Bachelor’s Degree in Vocal Performance (1981) and a Master’s Degree in Vocal Pedagogy (1983). Hal sang in the Opera Memphis educational touring branch, Southern Opera Theatre from 1979-1987, and has appeared in numerous productions with Opera Memphis. He has been a featured soloist in the Memphis Symphony’s Broadway “Pops” concerts on three occasions, and has performed many oratorio concerts and church programs throughout the Mid-South. Hal also runs his own business, Mid-South Financial Group, a retirement planning and wealth management firm.
